Empowering Saddam Hussain: Ensuring Health Security for Migrant Workers"

Case Study: "Empowering Saddam Hussain: Ensuring Health Security for Migrant Workers"

Introduction:
The "Ensuring Safety and Health Security of Migrant Workers" Program, an initiative under Caritas India, sought to support return migrant workers in Kollam District, focusing on empowering individuals like Saddam Hussain from Bengal. Many migrant workers faced financial hardships and limited access to healthcare, making their well-being a significant concern. The program aimed to provide medical kits to these workers, enabling them to take charge of their health and work in a safer environment.

Background/Rationale for the Activity:
Migrant workers often toil in demanding conditions with inadequate healthcare facilities, leaving them vulnerable to health issues. Saddam Hussain faced challenges accessing healthcare due to financial constraints. In response, the program designed and distributed medical kits containing essential health supplies, first-aid items, personal protective equipment, hygiene products, and Covid-19 prevention tools. The goal was to equip migrant workers with the tools to address minor health issues and promote self-care.

Methods and Process:
The project began with comprehensive field visits to assess the needs of migrant workers in Kollam. Saddam Hussain was identified as one of the beneficiaries. Based on the assessment, the organization designed the medical kits to meet specific health concerns. Necessary supplies were procured from reliable sources, and the kits were assembled in sufficient quantities. Distribution events were held at labour camps, worksites, and community centres, benefiting 300 migrant workers, including Saddam. Information sessions were conducted to educate the workers on kit usage, self-care, and health maintenance.

Description of Activity:
Saddam Hussain, a migrant worker in the construction sector, received a medical kit through the program. The kit provided him with immediate access to essential health supplies, addressing his health needs and empowering him to care for himself and his colleagues at work. The information sessions enriched his knowledge of first-aid techniques and proper kit usage, promoting self-care and health awareness.

Key Learnings and Results:
The distribution of medical kits yielded positive outcomes for Saddam Hussain and other migrant workers:

Improved Access to Health Supplies: Immediate access to health supplies improved hygiene and addressed minor health issues in challenging work environments.

Enhanced Self-Care and Health Awareness: Information sessions increased health awareness among workers, encouraging proactive measures for well-being.

Increased Resilience to Health Challenges: Workers gained resilience to handle health issues, reducing reliance on external healthcare for minor ailments.

Building Trust and Rapport: The program's care and solidarity fostered trust between Caritas India and beneficiaries, creating a positive impact on the worker community.

Safer Work Environment: Personal protective equipment and health supplies contributed to a safer work environment for Saddam and his fellow workers.

Way Forward:
1. Field Visits and Assessments: Regular visits will allow interaction with migrant workers, better understanding their challenges and needs.

2. Monitoring Medication Usage: Ensure proper usage of medical kits and provide guidance on proper usage.

3. Assessing Risk Reduction: Evaluate how medical kits contribute to reducing health risks and improved response to injuries and illnesses.

4. Addressing Challenges: Address any challenges faced by workers based on feedback during follow-up interactions.

5. Continuous Improvement: Continuously improve the medical kit distribution program, making necessary adjustments for specific health needs and distribution strategies.

"I am incredibly grateful for the medical kit provided through this program. It addressed our health needs and empowered us to take proactive measures for our safety and well-being in the workplace. Even after the kit is used up, we feel confident to purchase essential supplies ourselves, thanks to the valuable learning experience." - Saddam Hussain

“The introduction of medical kits has proven highly effective in fostering health awareness and empowering migrant workers to take proactive measures for a secure work environment. Field visits revealed the struggles faced by these vulnerable workers, and this program has made a positive impact on their safety and well-being.” - Sijo (Project Coordinator)
